Heart Shaped Rocks and Other Gifts from Nature

Nature does not judge — there are no pretenses where she is concerned. When I am with her, I don’t have to conceal my true self. I am at ease in her presence and I can breathe. She accepts me for who I am and I accept her.

When I am with Nature, I have no fear that she will put me down in order to lift herself up. Instead, she lifts me up again and again, selflessly nurturing.

If I have the dreary wearies, she is there to remind me that tomorrow is a new day.

Through her gifts, she shows me how sweet and good life is: a baby bird, tender leaf buds, fiery sunset skies, healing hands, elephant shaped clouds, warm spring rain, children, the sun on my face, real people, freshly laid eggs, and heart shaped rocks.

Thank you Nature.

Lovely. Nature once gave me a heart-shaped potato. It’s hard to beat such simple gifts.

When I first saw your heart rock, I was quickly reminded of the heart we made out of sand at the Toutle River Campground back in the late 70′s. Toutle River Campground in southwestern WA was one of my family and my cousins’ family favorite places in the late 70′s. My dad and grandpa loved steelhead fishing on the Toutle River and we kids: all of us cousins: 10 of us! had fun running wild all over, taking in the nature walks, bike rides, playing cards at camp, and making a huge heart out of sand at the river, then carving our initials in it and putting in huckleberry branches for decoration.

Then 1980 happened: Mt. St Helen’s blew and the river/campground/lakes were all gone. But with our photos, we will always remember our times, and our heart, at Toutle River.

Thanks for taking me down Memory Lane.

Ooh, a heart shaped potato. Emily, I love this! Did you eat it or plant it back in the earth to see if the offspring might carry on the trait? Fun! Thanks for sharing.

We have several heart shaped rocks that our sons found along the way when they were growing up. They are on our bookshelves, and each time we see them or dust the shelf we are reminded of two toeheaded little boys running around looking for rocks…..
Thanks for the wonderful sweet memories!!! It was so nice seeing you this week at BNG and meeting your husband Bradley!
Blessings to you and yours

All miracles in my mind. These are the real treasures in life, simple things that bring us joy and remind us how beautiful this planet is. Quite a post, it really reminded me of what is important. Thank you so much.

Miracles for sure, Bill. As I grow older, I am more and more aware of how the little things in life bring lasting joy.

I’ll tell you a secret.
It’s not very manly of me, but I collect heart-shaped rocks too. I give them to my wife (who really doesn’t really care; to her, they are just rocks.) I remember where I found every one of them. Whenever I pick them up, I am immediately taken back to that moment of discovery.

Thanks for sharing your secret, Joe. My son has given me many heart shaped rocks over the years and I remember exactly what he looked like when he handed them to me. Memory is an amazing, precious thing.
